Traditional vs. Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery

Many years ago, in your grandparents’ day, cataract surgery was considered quite risky, required a lengthy hospital stay and was usually postponed for as long as possible, until they were “ripe”. Today, cataract surgery is a comfortable outpatient procedure.

Although it is surgery, the risks with modern cataract surgery are very low. You should not be anxious or afraid of the procedure. Rest assured that Dr. Boyd utilizes the latest techniques, instruments, and intraocular lenses IOLs) to provide excellent outcomes.

Learning that you have a cataract can cause concern, but once you understand how your vision may be improved, you may actually become excited!

(Basic) Traditional Cataract Surgery

Traditional cataract surgery involves creating a microscopic incision with a surgical steel or diamond blade. The cataract is then removed using an ultrasonic device (phacoemulsification) that breaks the cloudy lens into small pieces. These pieces are then gently removed from the eye using suction. Next, a clear intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted into the eye in the same location your natural lens occupied. The small incision seals itself naturally and allows for comfortable & rapid healing.

Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery can also be performed with the assistance of a laser. The Cataract and Laser Center is equipped with the LenSx® femtosecond laser which was specifically designed for cataract surgery. This technology brings a new level of precision and accuracy to specific steps in cataract surgery that traditionally have been performed with hand-held surgical instruments.

The Femtosecond laser creates an incredibly precise surgical incision to access and remove the cataract. The laser also softens the lens, enabling Dr. Boyd to remove the cataract with significantly less ultrasonic energy than used in typical manual cataract surgery. This gentle, low energy approach reduces inflammation and helps speed recovery.

Like a fingerprint, your eye has a unique size and shape. Prior to treatment, the laser uses a high resolution 3-D imaging device to give Dr. Boyd a fully automated analysis of the cornea and lens surfaces. This enables Dr. Boyd to create a customized treatment plan just for you including the correction of astigmatism.

  • High precision in treating astigmatism
  • Individually optimized 3D mapping
  • Treatment with little to no discomfort
  • Gentler, easier cataract removal
  • Reduced inflammation for improved visual recovery time

Either type of procedure can be effective when performed by a skilled surgeon like Dr. Boyd. But, the precise, reproducible steps performed by the laser provide better lens positioning, less trauma to the eye and more predictable visual results. Dr. Boyd is always looking for ways to improve your surgical experience and is pleased to offer customized treatment options, including precise laser treatments and advanced technology lens implants.
