Is the Light Adjustable Lens the Future of Cataract Surgery?

Characterized by a clouding of the natural lens of the eye, cataracts are one of the most common causes of vision impairment. Fortunately, with the benefits of cataract treatment, patients can achieve clearer vision and a better quality of life. But while traditional cataract surgeries are fast, effective and reliable, many Newark patients will not attain their target vision. The introduction of the Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL) seeks to change this outcome and deliver 20/20 vision.

What Is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The LAL was developed by RxSight® as a way to solve a drawback with cataract surgery. While cataract surgery is one of the safest surgeries performed around the world today, it involves the replacement of the clouded natural lens with an artificial lens using an incision into the cornea. It is the subsequent healing process that makes it difficult  to precisely predict the quality of a person’s vision.

LAL is noticeably different, as it provides the ability to customize vision after the treatment. Unlike existing artificial lenses, LAL uses photosensitive molecules that can change the lens curvature and refractive power after exposure to light treatment. A series of short treatments at Eye Care of Delaware is all it takes to deliver predictable vision outcomes.

How Is LAL Different From Other Cataract Treatments?

You may understand laser vision correction through procedures like LASIK. Some patients may choose to get vision correction after completing cataract surgery to fix nearsightedness or farsightedness. However, with LAL, a substantial number of people achieve optimized vision without further surgery.  According to the FDA, a study of 600 patients found that LAL was twice as likely to achieve 20/20 vision after six months, in comparison with standard monofocal intraocular lenses.

Aside from the groundbreaking post-surgical light treatment and personalized vision aspects, LAL resembles any other cataract surgery: a small incision is made and ultrasound energy is used to break up the natural lens. These lens pieces are removed and a new lens is inserted into place. In most cases, this part of the surgery is completed within 10 – 15 minutes.

Why You Should Consider Light Adjustable Lens Treatment

There has been a consistent evolution in technology among the many types of cataract surgery, and LAL is the next step forward. Here are some reasons why Light Adjustable Lenses might be right for you.

  • LAL is effective for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
  • Reduces the need for glasses or contact lenses.
  • LAL is the only non-invasive adjustable intraocular lens (IOL).
  • The treatment delivers superior results for cataract patients.
  • Light treatment offers predictable visual outcomes, especially for patients who’s corneas have been altered with RK, LASIK or PRK
