Cataracts are a principal cause of blindness in the United States. Since June is Cataract Awareness Month, we are joining with the American Academy of Ophthalmology to raise awareness for this treatable condition. Regular eye examinations are key to detecting cataracts and other vision issues early-on. If you have developed cataracts, we have various surgical options for effective cataract treatment. With early detection and skilled treatment, Delaware residents suffering from cataracts can dramatically improve their vision.
Early Cataract Awareness & Detection
So how do cataracts form? Cataracts result from your eye’s lens turning cloudy. This may result from age, sun exposure, injury and even medical conditions such as diabetes. Plus, some medications could contribute to cataract formation. These factors that many of us deal with highlight the importance of regular eye exams. When cataract detection occurs early, you can make some lifestyle alterations to reduce the impact. An update to your prescription eyeglasses could make a difference, along with health changes such as weight loss, smoking cessation and wearing sunglasses in bright light. Your eyecare professional will determine if surgery is your best option.
Cataract Surgery – Choosing the Best Intraocular Lenses
Advanced technology Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) are sophisticated lens replacements for the natural lens in your eye that has become cloudy. At Eye Care of Delaware we offer three types of surgical options, each offering specific benefits to the individual patient.
1. Basic Lens
The Basic Lens is the traditional cataract treatment. There are also advanced technology lenses that can provide more independence from glasses, but note that the Basic Lens does not correct astigmatism. For people who are comfortable wearing glasses and want a more economical option, the Basic Lens is a very effective choice.
2. Custom Distance Lens
The Custom Distance option allows astigmatism to be corrected either with a laser or with a special Toric lens implant. This implant has the correction for the astigmatism in the lens itself. With this option, you would still require reading glasses for computers and close work.
3. Expanded Range of Vision Lens
This option provides patients with the greatest level of vision improvement. The expanded Range of Vision lens can correct the astigmatism to provide good distance vision, and also give the patient some intermediate vision, (computer/dashboard) range, plus some reading vision. Reading very small print, and reading in dimly lit rooms, may still require glasses.
The Best Cataract Treatment for You
Early detection of cataracts allows you to get the best treatment in a timely manner. Both traditional and laser surgery can be effective treatments that reduce the risk of vision loss. . Because every patient is an individual, we would like to discuss your cataract treatment options with you. We’re here to customize your cataract surgery to meet your personal visual goals.
Don’t Let Cataracts Go Undetected
Left untreated, cataracts will cause a decrease in vision and in some cases, blindness. These issues can be avoided when your cataracts are detected and treated by an experienced eye doctor.
